BikeBeat's commitment to advocacy began over 20 years ago with David's work as a founding member of the Historic Triangle Bike Advisory Committee. Today, we continue to engage in education and advocacy throughout the Hampton roads area.

Here are some key national organizations working to improve bike and pedestrian safety:

People For Bikes

League of American Bicyclists

Alliance for Biking and Walking

The Virginia Bicycling Federation is Virginia's statewide advocacy organization.  Their email updates are the best way to stay up-to-date with what the General Assembly does in regards to bike/ped issues.

In Williamsburg and upper York county the Active Williamsburg Alliance works with individuals, the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists, and the Historic Triangle Bike Advisory Committee to promote bike and pedestrian friendly infrastructure and programs.

In south Hampton Roads, there's no single organization, but there are some outstanding individuals that need your help and support!

Bruce Drees is an LAB certified cycling instructor and a tireless advocate for safer facilities throughout Virginia Beach and Norfolk.  Bruce is also the advocacy chair for the Tidewater Bicycling Association.  If you'd like to get involved, check out his blog and drop him an email, he'd love to hear from you.

Tim, the coordinator for Share Shore Drive Day, created the ride/walk to highlight the need for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to share the road.  Shore Drive is the deadliest road in Virginia Beach with over 81 deaths since 1977.  Contact Tim thru his blog to find out how you can help him with this important event.

Education and Community Involvement

As part of our commitment to making our communities better for riding and walking, we work with a variety of community organizations to provide cycling instruction and inspiration.  In the past year we've supported Earth Day celebrations at Mount Trashmore and William and Mary, several elementary school health fairs, hosted boy scout troops for bike maintenance clinics, taught bike safety day camp, and much more!  Check out what we've been up to.
